Hair.......

Thanks all for the complimentary hair comments in the glasses post! I thought I had mentioned my haircut but I guess I hadn't filled all of you in on it. So to show you my new fun haircut, I'm sharing this goofy picture! Now you can see my new camera and my new hair, and of course my bathroom and my armpit and my cute and goofy husband! (This is totally not staged, just Derick playing with the camera while I was trying to get ready!)

Iced In!

We live in a cute little fifty year old house and on days like today I can really tell! It's just so drafty and cold in certain parts of the house, and the windows ice up like crazy. I have to admit, I love how cozy it looks, but just looking at it makes me feel cold!

Replaced........

You may recall our adventurous farm sledding day last weekend.....the only downside to the day was that my glasses fell out of my pocket (yes, I know, not the best place for them) and are now hidden somewhere under about two feet of drifted snow in the middle of the field. So I present to you, my new glasses! And they have clip on sunglasses, and they were a great deal! Now I can see again!

The Fruits of my Machine.......

I haven't had too much time for sewing on my new machine, but I was able to do this little project that I've been wanting to do for awhile. Three little pincushions, for myself and my two lovely sisters! Who knows when they'll actually get put in the mail, but at least they're done! Jes and Kate, if you see this post you can put in your request!

my muse.......

My little violinist just finished a big long 8 week practice chart and so today was the big prize day. She chose a little Tinkerbell fairy doll and told me that she was going to put her with her mermaid and her other fairy in the corner of her room where she plays. Then she told me that wasn't really just a corner of her room, it was her magical corner, where everything magical happened!

Anyways, I just have to say I'm so proud of her. She's learning Song of the Wind, and she focuses so hard on getting her little third finger to hop independently from the A string to the E string. It just makes a mama's heart sing!

Farm Day......

Even bundled up baby got to come along for the ride!
Cousins!
Yes, of course, doesn't everyone sled like this? That's a water trough hitched to a snowmobile!
White-out conditions at the bottom of the sledding hill.
Of course, all farm kids get to learn to drive the truck at a young age.
And the best part about sledding at the farm, the curious animals watching us........

"Wait up! I want to sled too!"

Skating.......

We have taken up ice skating as a new winter pastime, and our little Ember is loving it! Her kindergarten goes every Thursday with moms and siblings welcome. Gavin loves riding along in the stroller. And we even went last week with Daddy to show him what a good little skater Ember is. She's a bit of a slow mover, but she is so confident and keeps telling me she wants to be on a girl hockey team when she grows up! And just so you all can feel like you were there with us, here's a little video.........

The Great Apron Exchange 2007 - Part II

The final apron unveiling has arrived! One again, thanks everyone for participating in the Great Apron Exchange, I hope you've all been whipping up extra gourmet meals in your dazzling new aprons.

First off we have the adorable Jesie, modelling her stunning apron made by Peggie in her matching red and white kitchen. It looks great, but of course everything looks great on Jes. And check out her Kitchen-aid in the background! (I'm a little jealous!) (And just so you all know, I'm definitely a background snooper in your pictures, I love to see everything in your houses!)
Next is the beautiful Peggie, sporting an awesome made by Jesie apron. I love the ribbon trim on the edges! And I also love the red walls! (Actually, I think our next exchange should just be pictures of our kitchens, because I'm really enjoying seeing everyone's kitchens and imagining all the delicious foods you cook!)
And of course, my lovely mother! She is posing for us in a beautiful apron made by yours truly, and I think it looks great on her. It's so fun to sew something for someone, and then finally see them wearing it in their own home, it's like a part of me flew through the mail to be there with her! Love you mom!
And last but certainly not least, Dad! Also sporting the quilted apron. I just loved this picture too much not to share! I have to say, he can hold his own in the kitchen and I'm envisioning plenty of crepe mornings and mexican fiesta nights in his future, certain to be enhanced by this lovely apron!

Magical Mail Day!

The long awaited mail day has finally arrived! Emberly’s doll was delivered this morning as we were getting ready to go ice skating with her Kindergarten class. This is what she had decided to buy with her Christmas money from Grandma Vi and Grandpa Gordon. (Thanks to both of you, she's in heaven!) She was so excited, we opened the big box immediately, but had to wait until this afternoon to open the smaller packaging. As I walked out of the room just now, I heard her whispering between her two dolls saying, "Isn’t it magical that you’re a fairy and I’m a mermaid!" I foresee many magical adventures together!

Frosty Morning......

A good day to stay inside and be domestic! :) I made four loaves of yummy whole wheat bread using my new wheat grinder (the same elderly lady who sold me her sewing machine also sold me a super workhorse wheat grinder!), and a crockpot full of delicious beef stew! It smells good here, wanna come over?

Recipe Rave!

You all have to try the recipe for Oatmeal Pancakes from Hillbilly Housewife! Delicious! I've been wanting to blog about my love of these pancakes for awhile. It is Emberly's most requested breakfast, and I usually make up a double batch and freeze the excess to pop into the toaster on busy school mornings. I also add cinnamon to the recipe, and I substitute kefir for the buttermilk. And we always top them with real butter and maple syrup! Yum!

And take a few minutes to browse the other recipes on the site, and definitely try the chocolate pudding recipe! It's divine! I usually make it with whole milk instead of reconstituted dry milk. But it's definitely worth trying and very easy!
Oh, and as much as I'd like you all to think my photography skills have much improved, I'd like to thank this website for the picture! Don't they make your mouth water a bit? Yum!

Show-and-Tell........

Mondays are show-and-tell days at Kindergarten and Ember starts counting down the days every week starting at about Wednesday, she just loves bring a favorite something! This week she chose her little Only Hearts doll and unicorn, and we dressed her as a fairy and she rode in this sweet little bag Grandma Vi gave me (thanks Grandma!). She was one excited Kindergartener this morning!

Cars.......

Gavin's found a new love in Grandpa's remote control cars! We spent the afternoon out at the farm today and we literally had to drag him kicking and screaming from the basement where Grandpa's car collection is kept. He couldn't get enough!

Isn't she a beauty?

There she is! As much as I love my 40 year old Pfaff, I've known for a little while now that I needed a bit of an upgrade. I happened upon this great little Viking and was able to buy her for an amazing deal, and I'm sooooo excited! Doesn't she look so regal and tall? (And I have to admit, a little intimidating! There's so many buttons!) This, of course, is my not very helpful helper.
And I love this! This was when he was right after he tried touching the needle with his finger! That's him moving away quickly and saying "Uh oh!"

Photographing a Toddler: a study

I love how I caught that last one mid fall! Sorry about the huge amount of photos in this post. I intended to capture one beautifully composed and super cute shot of Gavin playing outside this morning, but when I got looking at all the pictures, none of them were great, but all of them together totally expressed his busy little personality. So if anyone out there has a great idea for photographing toddlers on the move, let me know!
And then we came inside to frothy homemade hot chocolate! And don't you love the little tile trivet! One of my violin students made it for me for Christmas, it makes my drinks extra yummy!

wishing......

Emberly has been poring over this little catalogue of dolls that she loves, wishing for and dreaming about each little doll and the clothes they have and the animals they come with. With her Christmas money she decided to buy one with a mermaid costume, but since they're not available anywhere locally, we special ordered one and so every day has become an exciting mail day. This is how she was today while I was making dinner, telling me all sorts of things about her doll that's on its way! She is worried though, that it might be lonely in the box while its travelling.

busy morning.......

Today was Ember's first day back at Kindergarten so to start the semester off right, Gavin and I were up and out the door with her too, then we hit the 15% off day at the grocery store, and even made it to the gym for a pilates class. Whew!

I've been inspired by Amanda's idea of 30 days of everyday moments, and I thought it would be a great way to get to know my new camera. I'm a total photography wannabe and I know nothing about it so I just drool over people's sites and do a lot of wishful thinking. Anyways, if you frequest my blog (I'm probably just talking to my sister Kate who has a degree in photography) you might have to wade through a lot of amateur photos while I figure some of this out!

Happy Three Kings Day!

This is how we celebrated! Emberly was so surprised to find that her shoe was filled with an orange and some chocolate, and then this lovely little house was standing next to it. When I was a kid we celebrated Three Kings Day every year, but it's new to our little family, so it was an exciting morning. Gavin was just interested in the chocolate.

This little house came as a DIY project for Ember and mom, we decided to make it into a little fairy house. Two little woodland fairies came with it, but Ember is hoping that once it's decorated, the real fairies will visit at night and sleep in little beds she's planning on making.
And of course we celebrated with yummy chocolate chip cookies!

The Great Apron Exchange 2007!

First of all, I just have to compliment my amazing family on being so wonderfully creative and talented! This apron exchange included seven of us from Alaska to Arizona to Alberta to Wisconsin to Utah. Emberly drew the names for who would send to whom, assignments were given, and then the creativity began. I'm so honoured to belong to a family of such talented and artistic women! Thank you all for the fun!

Here is the beautiful Grandma Vi with her gorgeous apron from Teresa. Grandma, you look really great, you make me want to put on some red lipstick, red nail polish, and red shoes and go out on the town!
Here is Teresa standing in her eclectic artistic kitchen that makes you feel like you just walked into an antique store! And of course the stunning reversable apron that Katie made her looks right at home, and those chicken pot pies are making me hungry!

Here is Katie modelling a beautiful apron made by Mom! And talk about hungry, I see she preparing a Christmas feast we're all jealous about! If you'd like to drool over it a little more you can read about it here. Yum!
And of course, we can't leave Emberly out of the family fun! Luckily Grandma Lynne always makes sure everyone's included and she sent Ember this adorable little apron with little Grandmas all over the fabric. And my beautiful personalized apron from Grandma Vi (and I hear Grandpa was involved as well) makes me homesick for Kenai Lake every time I look at it! It's embelished with buttons and pictures from my favorite place in the world! Thanks Grandma, I love it!

Coming soon.......the rest of our apron models will be joining us shortly!
