one more.....

I know it's silly to do a whole post just to throw in a picture of Grandma's homemade rolls, but they're so yummy looking, I just have to add them. We stayed at Derick's grandma's house on Christmas Eve and that's where Santa found us in the night. Lots of fun! And of course she's an amazing cook, good old fashioned farm fare!

How my brain feels sometimes........

......trying to get everything done! I have so many things I'd like to be updating on here, but we're in the homestretch to Christmas here and I'm determined to finish everything on my list! I hope you are all enjoying the whirlwind of the holidays! (That's our Christmas tree by the way!)

The season is upon us......

Emberly and I had a wonderful mother/daughter date yesterday going to a matinee of the Nutcracker. So magical! It brought back happy memories of being little and going with my mom to see the Nutcracker. I remember how much I loved the part when the Christmas tree grows in the middle of the night, I was always in awe!

I think it was pretty magical for her, she seemed entranced the entire time. Or maybe just tired, we both were recovering from stomach flu (yes, I got it too). No really, it was so fun, even feeling a bit under the weather. It was a performance put on by students of the University community ballet program, the same program Ember was in last year. So it wasn't a big professional ballet troop or anything, but they did an excellent job! And they had some professional dancers for the main roles.

Anyways, just wanted to let the world know that we are officially caught up in the season! We don't quite have the tree up, but we're celebrating all the same!

Bouncy, bouncy, bouncy, bouncy.........

Fun fun fun fun fun!
I just had to share Ember's latest favorite toy! Grandma Vi and Grandpa Gordon sent her some birthday money and she was so excited to pick something special. This is the first thing she gravitated towards in the store and she's barely stopped bouncing since she got it! She absolutely adores it! Thanks Grandma and Grandpa!

I posted this picture of Ember tonight because it's the opposite of how she's been all day. Poor girl, after throwing up about 30 times last night, she's been sleeping all day on either the couch or my bed. I seriously ran out of towels, pillowcases, and blankets last night and today's been a marathon laundry day. This evening while I was teaching violin, Gavin threw up all over my bed. So hopefully I don't have another night of throw-up vigil! Not fun! I'm trying to look on the bright side and enjoy the fact that everything in my linen closet will be freshly laundered for the holidays!

And thanks for the thoughts for Grandpa Walburger. It was really nice to gather together with the family over the weekend, sharing memories and emotions. Apparently we also shared a stomach bug because another cousin's been throwing up. Ahhh, families......love 'em!

In Memory of.........

Chet Walburger, beloved Grandfather. We will miss you. Our hearts are a little heavy right now so the blog will be quiet for the weekend as we gather to celebrate Grandpa's amazing 87 years. A wonderful man!

The Post-bath Bath.........

So Gavin, my little water boy, has added a new step to our bedtime bath routine, the post-bath bath. The best way to freshen up your jammies before you hop into bed! Don't ya love it! I didn't love it so much at the time, but I have to admit, it was pretty funny! (For those cloth diaper lovers out there, there's a super heavy duty night time diaper and wool cover on under those jammies........just soakin' it up!) Now we have to obsessively keep the door to the bathroom closed after baths because he heads straight for the tub.!

I *heart* Babywearing!

Gavin's been a bit of a handful lately and sometimes I forget one of my favorite parenting survival tools, babywearing! So yesterday during a particularly challenging time, I put him in the mai tei to get a few things done. Within about 20 minutes, this is what happened! Oh to be a baby and be that comfortable!
And today he actually brought me the carrier and wrapped a bit of it around his waist to show me what he wanted! :)

Party Dress.......

When Ember decided her doll needed a new addition to her wardrobe, she went through the Kinder Dolls book and chose the party dress pattern and this is what we came up with. It's a super soft flannel that she picked out of my scrap box, and I picked the shiny satin ribbon. The next morning when she found her doll all dressed up in her new frock she said, "It's a good thing she got this party dress Mom, because today's her birthday!" What a lucky doll!

Me and my Boy.......

Just a quick self-portrait of Gavin and I.......don't you love his serious blue eyes! I've noticed in pictures that Ember's eyes are starting to look more like my grey eyes, but he still has that brilliant blue. I am loving my spirited boy! Every day he does about 50 things that make me cringe a little, but it's hard to resist the blue eyes. The poor little guy's been a bit sick lately, just runny nosed and clingy and whiny, but nothing too horrible. I get to enjoy random dried snot spotches on my clothes, gotta love a spirited little boy! :)

Happy Birthday Emberly!

Five years ago this little cutie came into our lives and now she's a big grown-up five year old! We love you Ember!

Cake Face!

We had the big birthday bash tonight and this is a shot of the preparations yesterday! I haven't uploaded all the new pictures from Grandma's house yet, but I thought I'd give you a sneak preview of the yummy chocolate cake. As you can see, Ember's enjoying it so far. We had a snowy day today for our drive out to the farm so it feels like November's here. Good night all, I'm off to decorate the dining room for the birthday girl, she says she wants a surprise birthday tomorrow and pancakes, so I've got some work to do!

Trick-or-Treat!

Here we are heading out, the ballerina and the dinosaur! I just had to include all these pictures of Gavin because he refuses to take a normal standing pictures, mostly I just have blurry shots of him running by or charging shots of him trying to attack the camera. I guess that's fitting for a dinosaur!

Kindergarten Princess!

Here's our little ballerina princess getting ready for the big party at Kindergarten! She had soooo much fun! Kindergarten Halloween parties are the place to be!
Getting her slippers out........so serious!

My Dishwashing Companion........

I usually don't get around to doing my dishes until 9 or 10 o'clock at night, and lately I've had a little visitor outside my kitchen window. I thought that this would be a fitting post for today, when all the spooky things come out to haunt us! Now I know this picture does not do him justice, but he is honestly about the size of a twooonie! (And for my American friends out there, that's about a silver dollar!) Anyways, I feel safely fascinated by him because he's on the other side of two layers of glass, but I don't think I'd feel quite the same if I ran into him in my kitchen!

Emberly the ballerina princess is off livin' it up at the Kindergarten party this morning! Gavin and I got to go take pictures for a bit this morning and he was thrilled! We saw a little Shrek, Superwoman, two ninja turtles, a butterfly, a skunk, and many others. I promise a good collection of Halloween pictures after the day's festivities. Enjoy your pumpkin day!

Carving........

We're getting ready for the big day tomorrow! There'll be lots of tricks and treats around here, and a little ballerina princess and a dinosaur. Tonight we carved up the pumpkin that's been our centerpiece for a month, and G feasted on some delicious raw pumpkin guts, yum! The seeds are roasting in the oven right now and I'm trying to convince my ballerina princess that the sooner she goes to bed, the sooner the Kindergarten Halloween party will come. Hmmm, I guess I'd better go get my little ones off to sleep. Haunted dreams everyone!

Blog Action Day.......Cloth!!!

Okay, in honour of the topic of Blog Action Day, the environment, I thought I'd share a little cloth diaper love with ya! My babies have both worn almost exclusively cloth except for the occasional pack of sposies. I have to say, I really love them! Wouln't you rather wear soft velour, hemp, flannel, and wool than plasticky, papery, gel beady throw-aways? Cloth can be super simple, much more than most people realize. And there's something so satisfying about stacking up a pile of freshly laundered diapers, ready for the next go-around!

Being Thankful......

I know I'm a bit behind, but Megan the procrastinator has had a camera with dead batteries for the last couple of weeks and I keep puting off posting until I have some current pictures. Anyways, lame excuse, I know, but the batteries are in the charger right now, and I found a
beautiful farm picture in my files to share. We celebrated Canadian Thanksgiving over the weekend with the family and enjoyed visiting with everyone on the farm. We also heard some great uplifting words from the general authorities. So for myself, I know I left the weekend thankful for my many blessings and resolved to be a better mom and altogether a better person. I hope your week has been just as good!

Camera Happy!

I think these pictures capture Gavin's personality perfectly! He loves to have his picture taken and then check out the image on the little screen. This particular evening he actually brought the camera to me and then started dancing around! That's our free spirit!

School Pictures........

Last week was picture day and Emberly's class took a special field trip on a school bus to a professional portrait studio. She was thrilled, and though I haven't seen the pictures yet, I have high hopes for them. Of course she looked cute as always, and here she is practicing her smile with her doll, who is of course wearing her matching blue dress. I made the dress out of a blue t-shirt of mine that I didn't particularly like, but it's great as a doll dress. Two days ago I was wearing a favorite shirt of mine that happens to be pink, and Ember came up to me and said, "I think my doll wants a pink dress now." I told her I didn't have any pink fabric, and she pointed to my shirt and said, "Well, how about that shirt?" So hopefully I don't find her some days with a favorite piece of clothing and some scissors. (Although I can't imagine Emberly ever doing that! She's always such a conscientious little girl!)

mmmmmm, Baking!

The cold weather is creeping in and with it comes an urge to bake! Yum! With Jesie, Nate and Sam visiting this last weekend, of course the occasion called for yummy soup, bread, and Derick's grandmother's famous apple pie recipe! ( I tried photographing the soup but it looks less than appetizing!) So enjoy this little peek into my warm autumn kitchen.

For the love of a doll.......

I've been wanting to blog about our new little doll for awhile, I just haven't gotten to it. Last year I cut the fabric out for a waldorf doll for Emberly and she spent about two weeks asking me when I was going to sew her doll. Of course I never did and it became a forgotten UFO on the back of my shelf. As the end of the summer drew near I decided to try and get the doll made before Ember started Kindergarten as a special little gift. I was going to do it as a surprise, but it was too hard to only sew at night, and I'm so glad I was able to involve Ember in the whole process. She was so excited! Every day she would ask me what part of her doll was done. When it was just the head, she carried it around all day, the next day it was a naked body with a head but no hair or face! She loved it already, she even made a little bed for it and it slept next to her each night. It took me about 4 days to make her wig and then one night while Emberly was sleeping I sewed on her hair and finished her face and tucked her back into bed. She was elated in the morning!

I think this little doll came alive in those couple of weeks. Being a perfectionist with my sewing, there are a lot of little details about her that I don't especially like, but honestly, that's what makes her! She's like a little kid that just seemed to develop her own personality as each new part came together. Her wild hair, her uneven eyes, the stain on her back that just wouldn't come out.......they all make her a little more real.

Anyways, here she is, the night she was finished..........

And of course a girl with her doll........

She finally got a little dress and some underwear last week, but I'll have to post pictures of that later. Her dress was finished just in time for Emberly's first day of show-and-tell, and let me tell you, it makes a mama proud when her Kindergartener wants to take her special mama-made doll to show her class! And just in case you're wondering, I'm not sure what her name is. It's changed a number of times, last I heard it was Sara. But before that we had Laura, Laura-Lily, Elizabeth, Emily, Emily-Elizabeth, and Pocahontas. So you'll have to ask Ember yourself. :)
